Abstract

356,374. Mixing and atomizing charge ; admitting auxiliary charges ; regulating. WOOLLISCROFT, J. H., 1, King Edward Street, Liverpool. July 9, 1930, No. 20761. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] A charge - mixing and atomizing device comprises a ported cage located within the inlet pipe, and containing a number of loose balls capable of freedom of movement within the cage. The cage 1, Fig. 1, is screw-threaded at 4 to receive two elbow fittings 2, 3 through which the mixture passes. The lower end of the cage is conical, and ported, and carries the balls 8, the upper end also being ported. The balls are displaced by suction and provide spaces for the passage of mixture; they also become coated with fuel and thus provide means to facilitate starting and acceleration. In a modification, Fig. 4, the lower end of the cage is formed with helical blades 9 to whirl the mixture, and the wall of the cage may have ports 10 opening into a chamber 11 communicating with the atmosphere or the carburetter float chamber so that additional air or fuel may be admitted. The inlet pipe to chamber 11 may be provided with a non-return ball valve. In a further modification, the cage has a flange adapted to be clamped between the flanges of the carburetter and induction pipe. The whole device may be heated by hot water, hot air, or electrically. By suitably choosing the number of balls, the device may function as a governor, the balls rising on increased flow to close more or less the slots in the upper end of the cage.
