Abstract

355,714. Motor vehicle driving axles; spring suspensions. WILKS, S. B., Claybrook Grange, Rugby. May 27, 1930, No. 16290. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iv).] Relates to flexible driving axles of the kind in which a casing enclosing differential or other gearing is secured to the chassis frame while each driving shaft, which is unenclosed, is connected at one end through a universal joint to the gearing and runs at its other end in a bearing directly attached to a pair of transverse springs, on opposite sides of the driving shaft, by which the chassis frame is supported. According to the present invention (a) the bearing 12 for each driving shaft 8 is supported by a horizontally-arranged bridge member 14 the ends of which are attached to the ends of the transverse springs 18, (b) the transverse springs are in a substantially horizontal plane with the driving shafts, their outer ends converge, and they are secured at their inner ends to the differential casing 2, (c) the springs are slidably and resiliently connected to the means 14 carrying the driving shaft bearings, each shaft bearing 12 being enclosed for this purpose between dished covers 13 clamped by bolts 17 between channel-section arched bridge members 14, the bolts passing freely through slots 22 in the ends of the springs, and rubber pads 21 being provided above and below the spring ends, and (d) each driving shaft 8 terminates in a flange 9 drilled to receive bolts by which the road wheel can be directly attached to the shaft. The casing 2 is bolted to a frame member 4 and the shafts 8 are connected to the differential shafts by universal joints 7.
