12,377. Moore, S. Bramley-. May 23. Axles and axle structures; torque - rods.- Comprises a live - axle drive for motor-cars in which each driven roadwheel is allowed independent vertical movement. Fig. 1 shows the gear in elevation. The worm A drives a wormwheel B mounted on the differential casing C, which is itself carried in bearings in a casing D. An axle sleeve S is attached rigidly to one end of the casing D, and the other axle sleeve T is connected to the casing by a spherical joint E. A universal joint F on the driving-axle within the spherical joint allows for the relative angular movement of the axle sleeves. The outer ends of the axle sleeves are connected to the frame by springs H. The worm-wheel B is disposed unsymmetrically with regard to its bearings so as to equalize the loads thereon. The casing D is suspended from the frame of the vehicle by a link L, or a spring or pivotal connexion may be employed Two links such as L may be used, one at the front and the other at the rear of the casing, to take the place of a torque-rod. Bevel gearing may be employed instead of worm gearing.
