Abstract

15,433. Wellington, J. M., and Dawson, G. C. July 21. Motor road vehicles.-The wheels of a motorvehicle are mounted on the outer ends of axle portions which are provided at their inner ends with one or more pivots carried by a fixed part of the vehicle frame. The casing 1 containing the driving and differential gear, preferably of the type described in Specification No. 15,435, A.D. 1908, is detachably mounted on the frame 2. The outer ends of the divided axle are connected to axles 6 by universal joints. The wheels 7 are mounted on casings 8 surrounding the axles 6 and are driven from the latter, the inner ends of the casings having spherical enlargements 9 which enclose similar enlargements 10 formed in the extensions 11 of the casing 1. The spherical enlargements 9 are posi. tively connected with the similar parts 10 by pins supported by brackets on the frame, the overlapping parts being kept oil and dust proof by a gland 15 and packing. The springs of the rear axle are mounted on platforms 17 pivoted to the casings 8, a transverse spring secured to the frame at its centre bearing at its outer ends against the under portion of the casings, as described in Specification No. 15,440, A.D. 1908. Radius rods 19 or horn blocks are provided. In the case of a dead axle, the road wheels are mounted on the outer ends of two axles 21 pivoted at their inner ends by an ordinary pivot joint, the pin 23 being supported by a bracket 24 carried by the frame of the vehicle. Longitudinal springs 25 are mounted on pivoted platforms 26 and a transverse spring 27 bears at its outer or free ends against rollers 28 carried by the axles 21. Instead of the single joint at the centre, the axles 21 may be connected by two joints of a like nature.
