B. van ; 135, Westbrook Drive, Wickcliffe, both in Ohio, U.S.A.) Oct. 9, 1930, No. 30319. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1929. [Class 117.] Glass rods, tubes, &c. are sorted according to their thickness by passing them singly to the outer periphery of one or a series of rotating drums having grading slots adapted to select articles up to a maximum size, the selected articles passing to the inside of the drums and being discharged by shoots. The apparatus described comprises three sorting drums arranged in series, and each provided with a double row of apertures. As shown in Fig. 3, the effective width of the apertures is adjusted by blocks 40, and the selected rods are discharged by the laterally directed shoots 18, Fig. 2, supported inside the drums. The rejected rods are supported by the blocks 40, their ends lying in grooves between blocks 41, 42, and are carried round under guard-plates 43, 44 for delivery to the next drum in the series. At the delivery point, the rods are discharged by an internal sprocket wheel 53 rotated by engagement of its teeth with the drum apertures. The rods are fed to the upper drum by a toothed wheel 33 which carries them singly from a hopper 11 under a guard-plate 39. A spring 49 controls the delivery of the rods to the drum, and spring-controlled blocks 51 press each gently into the sorting apertures. A pivoted stop 32 is used to withdraw the mass of rods from the feeder when desired. All the sorting drums and the feed sprocket are geared to rotate in synchronism.
