Abstract

866,196. Screening apparatus. POWELL, T.W.S. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 4, 1958], No. 35329/58. Class 117 A machine for at least partially separating potatoes from soil, haulms and other matter comprises horizontal and parallel feed rollers 10-15 rotated in the same sense to carry the feed towards separating rollers 17, 18 rotated in opposite senses which remove haulms and light matter between them. Fine material falls between the feed rollers which consist of plain rollers 1'0-12 and rollers 13-15 with helical ribs therealong so that potatoes and free clods of earth and stones are together fed towards one end of the series of feed rollers where final separation may be effected. The rollers are mounted in a frame 22 and driven by a common drive chain and the roller 18 is carried in a vertically adjustable spring urged block so that the distance between the separating rollers is variable. A wide mesh conveyer 34, comprising spaced parallel bars 35 and widely spaced flexible bands normal to them, may run above the rollers and receive the initial feed and carry away the large unwanted matter. The separation rollers 17, 18 may be shorter than the feed rollers to leave a gap through which the potatoes are delivered; in a further modification one of each of the separation rollers has a smaller diameter extension at one end, and the potatoes are fed between them at that end.
