Potatoes are sorted from stones and clods by feeding them into a high frequency (e.g. 10-100 MHz) electric field between two rows of rod electrodes 3 and 4 defining a trough, detection of a potato, due to its dielectric properties, causing the appropriate rod 4 to be released to allow passage of the potato to conveyer 2 while stones and clods fall into box 7, rods 3 being deflected by the weight of a stone or clod or in response to detection of a stone or clod due to its different dielectric properties.
