[Also in Division B8] A method of separating e. g. potatoes from stones and clods of earth comprises feeding them serially past a test station where they are engaged by a pair of contacts and their A.C. and D.C. conductivities measured. Potatoes having a high skin resistance and low interior resistance present a high D.C. resistance but low A.C. resistance; stones present high A.C. and D.C. resistance; clods of earth present low A.C. and D.C. resistance. These signals may be applied to a conventional switching device to control conventional sorting apparatus. Rotten or damaged potatoes or apples may be sorted by rotating them at the test station so that the electrodes contact the rotten side.
