[Class 40 (v).] In a two-way carrier telephone, signalling system using differing frequency bands for the two directions the bands consist of sidebands of carrier frequencies which lie between the bands. A singlecarrier frequency may be used with the upper sideband for one direction and the lower sideband for the other direction. Common amplifiers V may be used at the intermediate repeaters with separate filters O, U, Fig. 3, or separate amplifiers may be used, Fig. 4, Phase compensation is preferably introduced at points where the channels are separate but attenuation may be equalized at the intermediate or terminal amplifiers. To prevent crosstalk the same frequency is used for both directions in adjacent lines and in a quad circuit the side circuits are used for the carrier signalling. Specifications 291,110 and 335,108, [both in Class 40 (v), Wireless signalling &c.], are referred to.
