Abstract

230,085. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitats-Ges., and Sattelberg, O.). Feb. 29, 1924, [Convention date]. Simultaneous telegraphy and telephony; phantom-circuit systems.-In a four-wire cable wound according to the known " spiral quad " formation in which all four conductors are directly twisted together, the physical circuits are employed for telephony and the phantom circuit with little or no added load is utilized for telegraphy and signalling or calling purposes. The necessity of accurately balancing the circuits is avoided by employing different ranges of frequency for the different purposes. In the system shown, telephone sets 5, 6 provided with chokes 7, 8 which block the lower frequencies serve for telephony over the pairs 1, 2; 3, 4; an instrument 14 fitted with a filter 13 passing only the lowest frequencies provides direct-current telegraphy over the phantom circuit; whilst duplex harmonic telegraphy also over the phantom circuit is available by means of instruments 16, 17 associated with a band filter 15 covering a range of frequencies lying between those passed by the devices 13, 7. Further telegraph circuits may be obtained by combining two phantom circuits of the first order to form a phantom of the second order and so on. Telephonic amplifiers in the side circuits may be by-passed by the provision of differential coils having their mid-points directly connected together.
