[Class 64 (i).] A heat exchanger for heating air and water by the furnace gases from steam generators, particularly for use in the generator plant, consists of a number of passages 12, Fig. 2, formed by parallel plates 11, along certain of which hot gases flow from inlet 16, Fig. 3, to outlet 18 and heat water tubes 13 arranged parallel to the gas flow, the walls of these passages radiating heat into adjacent passages along which air flows from inlet 19 to outlet 17. The apparatus may be divided by a plate 15 compelling the air and gases to make two passes in the apparatus. The water tubes are connected up by U-joins which are detachable or have closable openings to allow the tubes to be opened up. These U-joins may be isolated inend chambers 2, 3, Fig. 8, having removable covers 24 the water tubes 13 passing through expansion sockets 22 in a dividing wall 21. The air passages are closed at the ends by stoppers 14, Fig. 7, having curved ends 20 to guide the hot gases into the gas passages on each side of the air passage. One half of the heating may be wholly for air and water, and the other half a combination of the two, or water tubes may be omitted from some of the gas passages if it is desired to heat one of the two fluids more than the other.
