Abstract
351,613. Preventing fires. SWAN, A. and HELMORE, W., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. April 9, 1930, No. 11276. [Class 47 (ii).] Means for preventing fire from spreading through the cowling of an aero or other vehicle engine comprises forming the cowling as a closed chamber 4 with air filters arranged in openings 9 in its walls. The openings may have louvres 14 to deflect dust, and one or more thickness of wire gauze 10, and a pack 13 of flat and corrugated metal sheets, arranged as described in Specification 344,806. The air intake of the engine, which is inside the chamber 4, may be protected by an additional flame trap. Dimensions are given of safe overlap joints which may be employed for constructing and mounting the cowling, and for the clearance between control rods and tubes in the walls of the cowling through which they pass.
