Abstract
351,491. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Columbia House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Nyquist, H.; Marion Avenue, Millburn, New Jersey, U.S.A.) March 26, 1930, No. 9643. Convention date, July 20, 1929. Drawings to Specification. [Class 36.] In order to reduce far-end cross talk in a multiconductor telephone cable for two-way working, the conductors of the two speech directions are arranged in separate concentric cylindrical groups separated by a shield of magnetic and conductive material. The shield, which comprises several layers of thin wide tape applied helically with a short pitch about the inner group of conductors, is formed of a material, such as soft iron, having a high product of permeability and conductivity, and a ratio of permeability to conductivity substantially different from that of the conductors. In order to increase the conductivity of the shield, the magnetic tape may be coated with a layer of highly conductive material such as tin, zinc, copper, lead, silver, gold, nickel or chromium. The coating may be applied only to the overlapping portions of successive helices. In order to avoid magnetization of the shield due to longitudinal currents, the shield may be insulated from earth at the terminals of a repeater section.
