Abstract

351,087. Lubricating. FED DEN, A. H. R., BUTLER, L. F. G., and BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., Filton House, Bristol. March 25, 1930, Nos. 9512 and 1556. [Class 12 (ii).] Channels in connecting-rods.-In a big-end assembly for a radial-cylinder internal-combustion engine, one end of the main big-end 11 is surrounded by a ring 22, Fig. 1, in which oil escaping from that end is collected and led to the auxiliary big-ends 14, while the other end is surrounded by a ring 18 pressed by springs against the adjacent crank web so as to seal that end against escape of oil. The auxiliary big-ends 14 are mounted on hollow pins 15 carried in plungers 12, 13 on the big-end 11, each pin having a transverse partition 16 near one end forming a chamber 31 at that end. The ring 22 is formed with a series of pockets 23 registering with the chambers 31, so that oil passes from the end of the big-end 11 through an annular space 25 into the chambers 31, whence it reaches the bearing surface of the pins through ducts 17. The pins 15 engage conical holes in the flange 12 and, together with the ring 22, are held in position by bolts 21. Relative rotation between the ring 18 and the big-end 11 is prevented by a lug 19 on the former engaging a slot in the latter. In a modified arrangement, the collecting ring 28, Fig. 5, extends inwardly to the crank pin and an annular space 29 between the ring and the end of the bush 24 communicates with the chambers 31 in the pins 15 through ducts 30 in the big-end 11, the chambers 31 being closed by plugs 32 secured by bolts 33. According to the first Provisional Specification, a collecting ring may be provided at both ends of the main big-end and it may rotate with the crank pin, against which it may be pressed by springs.
