[Class 113 (ii).] Lifeboats with sheet-metal skins, have platemetal keels of substantial depth. Various constructions of the keels are described. As shown in Fig. 10, the keel plate 2 is stiffened by top and bottom angles 3, 4 and to the latter the skin plates A are attached. Fig. 16 shows a compound keel with plates 5, 6 flanged at top and bottom and spaced by the bulbed keel plate 10 and filling piece 9. The boats are also provided with internal or external stiffening ribs 14, Fig. 19, which in the case of external ribs may be provided with hand holes for life-saving purposes. As shown, the skin plates may be flanged for attachment to the ribs elsewhere, all the abutting edges of the plates may be flanged as described in Specification 197,175, [Class 113 (ii), Ships &c., Kinds &c. of], to form an internal cellular structure. The buoyancy tanks are located at the bottom on either side of the deep keel as well as at the sides. The longitudinal seats J, K are arranged as shown in Fig. 7. The framing comprises deep widespaced transverse frames 26, Fig. 32, connected to the floor 28 by butt straps 29 with intermediate shallower frames. Deep stringers N are connected up to the frames 26 and these stringers can also be applied at or above the thwart level. A horizontal fender 23, Fig. 28, is connected up by vertical members 24 with a hand grip 25. Transverse buoyancy tanks may be arranged beneath the thwarts.
