348,107. Speed indicators. FABRIQUES DES MONTRES ZENITH, Le Locle. Switzerland. Jan. 30, 1930, No. 3228. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1929. [Class 106 (iii).] Apparatus for indicating the observance or non- observance in a vehicle of a predetermined average speed or for indicating at what average speed a vehicle has run comprises a lever 4 pivoted at 11 and having a toothed sector 5 engaging a clockdriven screw 2, and a lever 6 pivoted at 12 and having a tooth 7 engaging a vehicle-driven screw 3, the two levers 4, 6 having forked ends 8a, 8 engaging pins 9a, 9 respectively on a lever 10 pivoted at 13 on a slide 14 movable in the groove 15 of a plate 16 secured to the baseplate 1 of the apparatus by screws 17, and the lever 10 having a toothed portion 19 actuating through gearing 20, 22, 23, the pointer A moving over the dial 24 to indicate the observance or non-observance of a predetermined average speed. In order to use the apparatus for different predetermined average speeds the pivot 12 of the lever 6 is moved in the slot 6a of the lever, the pivot being carried by a slide 30 carrying a pin 29 engaging in a slot 28 of a lever 26 pivoted at 27 and carrying a pointer B moving over a scale B<1> to indicate the predetermined average speed for which the apparatus is set. The lever 6 can be disengaged from the screw 3 and set to zero because of the slot 6a, and the lever 4 can be disengaged from the screw 2 and set to zero since its pivot 11 is formed on a slide 34 having screws 37 sliding in slots 36 in a plate 35. After a predetermined distance has been travelled a cam D on the lever 6 comes into contact with a pillar F causing the lever 6 to become disengaged from the screw 3, and after a predetermined time has elapsed the toothed sector 5 becomes disengaged from the screw 2 to prevent damage. To show the average speed at which a vehicle has travelled the apparatus is brought to zero and the pointer B moved to the extreme right of the scale B<1> before the journey, and after the journey the pointer B is moved to the left by the lever 26 until the pointer A indicates zero on the dial 24, the pointer B then indicating the average speed.
