[Class 102 (i).] The delivery of fuel to the cylinder of an internal - combustion engine is ascertained by measuring the amount returned to the suction side of the pump through a byepass valve or the suction valve during the delivery stroke of the pump, and deducting this from the known volume swept out by the pump piston. The fuel is drawn into the pump 1 from the suction pipe 2 past a stop-cock 3 and a non-return valve 10 which is adapted to be kept open during a part of the delivery stroke. The fuel returned through the valve 10 enters a measuring cylinder 8 through a stop-cock 6. The cylinder contains a spring-pressed piston 7, which moves a pointer over a scale 12. When the measuring device is in use, the valve 3 is closed, the fuel then passing from the pipe 2 to the pump through a non-return valve 5. When not in use, the valve 6 is closed and 3 opened. In another form, the surplus fuel passes to the measuring device through a byepass valve.
