[Class 126.] The front frame of an open fireplace is covered with a shell 11 of art metal and is arranged with its inner edge in spaced relationship with the firebrick backing in such a way as to form a channel for cooling air extending between this edge and the firebrick, thus preventing overheating and discolouration of the shell. In the construction shown, the edges of the shell 11 are turned over those of the frame 10, which may be recessed at the back as shown to receive the edges of the shell. To the rear faces of the upright members of the frame are attached angle members 17 by means of eyerings 18 engaging studs 19 projecting from the frame members. The rearwardly-projecting web of the angle member 17, which may as shown be inclined to the face of the frame, forms the spacing member between the edge 13 of the shell and the firebrick, and the edge of the frame member projecting inwardly of it forms a channel up which cool air passes. The eye-bolts 18 may serve to attach the frame to the backing, and an asbestos or other insulating strip may be inserted between the angle member 17 and the frame. The spacing member 14 of the horizontal frame member is formed integral with it, and provides a deeper channel than do the spacing members on the sides. The latter members may in alternative constructions be integral with the sides of the frame, or may be formed on the front edge of the fireclay back.
