[Class 85.] The rotary table of a well &c. drilling machine is driven through spur gearing and means are carried by the base adapted to engage the spur gear of the table to lock the latter against rotation. As shown, an integral base casting 1 has channelled lateral skids 31 and bracing webs 35 and also coaxial vertical flanges 3, 4. The rotary table 6 has coaxial vertical flanges 7, 8, engaging opposite sides of the flange 4 and is held against vertical motion by a ring 10 threaded to the flange 7 and locked by a spring-pressed pawl 36 pivoted to the ring 10 and engaging a detent 39 in the lower end of the flange 7 ; ball bearings 15, 19 are provided above and below the flange 4. A ring 23 is bolted to the flange 3 and engages the rotary table to form a closure, sealing means 29 being provided. A spur gear 9 is integral with, or shrunk on, the flange 8 and is engaged by a spur pinion 41 driven through a chain sprocket 42 and bevel gears 51, 52; this driving gearing is arranged as a unit in a housing 43 bolted to the base 1, the gears 41, 52 being integral and supported on a shaft 54 held in the housing 43 by a look ring 62 and nut 59, while the gears 51, 42 are carried by a shaft 50 supported on ball or roller bearings 47, 48 in a sleeve 49 secured to the housing by bolts 63, shims 78 providing for adjustment. The bearing 48 may be adjusted by a threaded ring 71 which is then locked by means of a ring 73 and bolts 74. The sprocket 42 has unequal hubs whereby the sprocket may be adjusted by reversal. For locking the rotary table, a pivoted member 79 is provided and is movable by a handle 85 to bring teeth thereon into engagement with the spur gear 9.
