Abstract

344,922. Reinforced - concrete poles and aerial towers. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd., Prescot, and PERKINS, A. E., Homecroft, Rainhill, both in Lancashire. Dec. 10, 1929, No. 37853. [Class 20 (i).] In a built-up reinforced-concrete pole, tower, or like structure, each section of the post &c. comprises one or more longitudinal members formed with laterally projecting arms, the ends of which are provided with exposed reinforcement adapted to be connected to the reinforcement of corresponding arms on an adjacent section. In the construction shown, a built-up post is formed of identical lower sections 1, 2 and identical upper sections 3, 4. The section 1, which comprises legs 5 connected by transverse reinforced members 6, is formed with laterally projecting arms 9. The section 2 similarly comprises legs 7, transverse members 8, and laterally projecting arms 10. The arms 9, 10 are reinforced by rods 13, 14, respectively, the ends of which are arranged to project beyond the arms and are bent in the form of a U, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. In order to connect together the sections 1, 2 of the post, the exposed ends of the reinforcing rods 13, 14 are bolted together and surrounded by grouting material 12. The upper post sections 3, 4 are constructed and connected together in a similar manner to the lower sections 1, 2. In order to connect the upper and lower sections 3, 4 and 1, 2, the lower ends of the legs 18, 19 of the upper sections are formed with laterally projecting arms 24, 25 adapted to be bolted to the uppermost arms 9, 10 on the legs 5, 7 of the lower sections, as shown in Fig. 8. The arms 9, 10 and 24, 25 are provided respectively with reinforcing plates 32, 33, the ends of which are exposed and adapted to be connected by a bolt 35. The exposed ends of the plates 32, 33 are finally surrounded by grouting 12. As shown in Fig. 1, a shear-resisting block 42 may be inserted between adjacent legs near the top of the post. In a modified construction, the sections may radiate from the axis of the post. A crossarm for a post constructed according to Figs. 1 and 2 may comprise a rectangular frame 39 adapted to embrace the post and formed with triangular extensions 40, as shown in Fig. 6.
