Abstract
396,745. Making posts. BURSTALL, A. F., Norton Hall, The Green, Norton-on- Tees, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Feb. 3, 1932, Nos. 3263, 3264 and 16293. [Class 83 (ii).] Tapered hollow structures for use as pylons for electric cables, or as crane jibs, are formed by welding together plates, or rolled sections, or both along their longitudinal edges and sealing the end by caps or finials or concrete to form an enclosed structure of triangular, quadrangular or polygonal cross section. Separate longitudinal sections of different size in cross section may be separately formed and stepped into each other and welded. According to one construction, two plates A, B, Fig. 1, are flanged and welded together at their corners C, D to form a structure of square section. In modifications, the flanges are dispensed with, and similar structures are obtained, for example, by bending a single plate, by joining two anglesection bars, and by combining a flat plate and one of channel or angle section. In the stepped construction shown in Fig. 7, two rolled metal angle-section members A, B are welded at their longitudinal meeting edges and are welded at G, H, J, K to two similarly united members E, F of larger dimensions.
