Abstract

The armouring wires of a submarine cable are formed of a non-magnetic alloy containing 72,88 per cent of iron, 0,59 per cent of carbon, 3,95 per cent of manganese, 6,07 per cent of chromium, 9,10 per cent of tungsten, and 7,41 per cent of nickel. Other suitable alloys comprise 85 per cent of iron, 14 per cent of manganese, and 1 per cent of carbon; or iron with 17 to 20 per cent of chromium, 7 to 10 per cent of nickel, and 0,2 per cent of carbon. A further alloy, which is first prepared in rod form and drawn partly down to the required diameter, annealed for 15 minutes at 1000 DEG C., and finally drawn, comprises 81,5 per cent of iron, 12 per cent of manganese, 6 per cent of nickel, and 0,5 per cent of carbon.
