Abstract
Artificial silk of the hollow filament type is prepared by employing as the spinning solution unmatured or feebly matured viscose of normal composition and of substantially normal viscosity and in which has been dispersed a small quantity, not exceeding 0,1 per cent, of naphthalene, nitronaphthalene, camphor, anthracene, or mixtures of two or more of such substances. The large volumes of gases produced from such viscoses during spinning are relied on to produce the desired inflation of the filaments, the added substances acting as nuclei for the formation of the necessary bubbles of gas. The preparation of the added substances in the dispersed form may be carried out in the viscose or before addition thereto; thus, if naphthalene is used, the required fine dispersion is obtained by pouring a solution of naphthalene in acetic acid or pyridine into an aqueous saponine solution. In an example, the coagulation bath contains sulphuric acid and sodium, magnesium and zinc sulphates. Specification 253,477, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
