Abstract
319,887. Hartogs, J. C. Aug. 20, 1928. Cellulose xanthates, processes for making fila.- ments from.-In the manufacture of artificial silk from viscose, finely divided sulphur is added to the xanthate solution, in an amount not exceeding 0.8 per cent, at any stage in the manufacture prior to spinning; in this way, the corroding action of the viscose on the iron parts of the apparatus is reduced. The sulphur may be added as finely divided crystalline sulphur or in the colloidal form, and in the latter event it is preferred to mix the sulphur with a protective colloid. The sulphur is preferably added before or during the ripening of the viscose, and, to facilitate the solution of the sulphur, the temperature may, be raised to 25-30‹ C., or the mixture may be agitated, ground or centrifuged. According to the examples, (1) finely divided sulphur is added to alkali cellulose, which is then xanthogenated, dissolved, and spun in the usual way, and (2) a composition comprising finely divided sulphur and a protective colloid is added to a viscose solutin, which is then spun as usual.
