[Class 36.] In a submarine communication cable of the kind in which a return conductor in the form of tapes is laid upon the insulation of a central conductor, the return conductor tapes are preshaped to have a curvature equal to the curvature of the insulated cable. The tapes may be drawn between rollers, one concave and one convex, the rollers being conveniently mounted on the extrusion head by which the insulating material is applied to the conducting core. The tapes may be preshaped and laid up by a machine of the kind described in Specification 342,825. The tapes are applied to the core with a long lay, and preferably without overlap. The central conductor of the cable may consist of a solid conducting core with tape surrounds preshaped to fit the core and laid up with a long lay.
