[Class 27.] Fraud, preventing; coin action, thrust.-In a prepayment gas meter, in order to prevent fraudulent actuation bv a n instrument inserted through the coin slot 10, Fig. 1, in the front plate, the quantity ratchet wheel 16, that is rotated by a handle 6 through the medium of a coin, is engaged by a pawl 18 pivotally mounted on the rear wall of the casing 1 by a pin and slot connection 19, 20, and having at its front end an extension 22 sliding in a cam slot 24, 26 in the rear wall. When the wheel 16 is rotated clockwise to open the valve, the pawl 18 is retained in engagement with the ratchet teeth until the part 22 moves out of the cam slot portion 24, the enlargement 26 then allowing the pawl to disengage against the action of a spring 21. At the end of its forward movement after the coin is discharged, the pawl moves the wheel 16 in the reverse direction a distance determined by the length of the slot portion 24. This distance may correspond to one or more teeth of the ratchet wheel. If an attempt is made to move the wheel 16 one tooth at a time by an instrument inserted through the slot 10, the pawl 18 reverses the movement. The coin acts by engaging a ledge 11 on a sliding member which it depresses to cause a driving tooth thereon to engage the ratchet wheel.
