Abstract

Lacquers, varnishes, paints, distempers, coating-compositions, and adhesives comprise an organic derivative of cellulose, a solvent-mixture containing an ether of glycol (which term includes dioxane) or a derivative thereof, and an aryl sulphonamide-aldehyde resin. Cellulose derivatives specified are cellulose acetates of high or low viscosity from chloroform-soluble to acetone-soluble, cellulose formate, propionate and butyrate, and methyl, ethyl and benzyl cellulose. Glycol derivatives specified are the mono-ethyl and mono-methyl ethers and their acetates and dioxane. Resins specified are those obtained from toluene, xylene and benzene sulphonamides and formaldehydes. Solvents, pigments, plasticizers, dyes and water may be added to the composition. Low-boiling solvents specified are acetone, alcohol, benzene, ethylene dichloride and mixtures of these. High-boiling solvents specified are diacetone alcohol and ethyl lactate. Plasticizers specified are diphenylol propane, mono-methyl xylene-sulphonamide, ethyl toluene-sulphonamide, and triacetin. Examples are given of a coating composition containing acetone-soluble cellulose acetate, a toluene-sulphonamide resin, dioxane or glycol monomethyl ether or its acetate, and low-boiling solvents with or without diacetone alcohol; a similar coating composition containing ethyl toluene-sulphonamide as plasticizer; and a similar composition containing a pigment. Reinforced glass; compound sheet materials.--The adhesive compositions may be used for securing reinforcing material to glass, and for joining wood, paper, cardboard or asbestos board to glass, rubber, metal, wood, &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of other nonphenolic synthetic resins including polyhydric alcohol phthalate resins such as glycol phthalate and diethylene-glycol phthalate resins, and refers to laminated glass. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:An adhesive composition comprises an organic derivative of cellulose, a solvent-mixture containing an ether of glycol (which term includes dioxane) or a derivative thereof, and an aryl sulphonamidealdehyde resin. Cellulose derivatives specified are cellulose acetates of high or low viscosity from chloroform-soluble to acetone-soluble, cellulose formate, propionate and butyrate, and methyl, ethyl and benzyl cellulose. Glycol derivatives specified are the mono-ethyl and mono-methyl ethers and their acetates and dioxane. Resins specified are those obtained from toluene, xylene and benzene sulphonamides and formaldehyde. The adhesive compositions may be used for securing reinforcing material to glass, and for joining wood, paper, cardboard or asbestos board to glass, rubber, metal, wood, &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of other non-phenolic synthetic resins including polyhydricalcohol phthalate resins-such as glycol phthalate and diethylene-glycol phthalate resins, and refers to laminated glass. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
