Abstract
Coating or impregnating compositions are made comprising more than 100 parts of a tartrate ester plasticizer to 100 parts of cellulose ether or more than 100 parts of an aromatic sulphonamide or a derivative thereof to 100 parts of an organic derivative of cellulose or more than 150 parts of an aromatic sulphonamide or derivative thereof and/or tartrate ester to 100 parts of an organic derivative of cellulose, together with a substantial proportion of a volatile solvent. Part of the plasticizer may be replaced by another plasticizer such as triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate, triacetin, diphenylpropane or diethyl phthalate. Suitable sulphonamides are the N-alkyl aromatic sulphonamides such as xylenemonomethylsulphonamide and dibutyl and di-iso-amyl tartrates are suitable tartrates. Suitable organic derivatives of cellulose are cellulose acetate, cellulose formate, cellulose propionate or other organic ester of cellulose or methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, benzyl cellulose or other cellulose ether. Suitable solvents are acetone, alcohol, benzene, methyl ethyl ketone, ethylene dichloride, the methyl ether of ethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol and ethyl lactate. There may be added natural or synthetic resins such as those obtainable by the condensation of phenols with aldehydes or ketones, diphenylolpropaneformaldehyde resins, furfural-ketone, furfural-amine, furfural-phenol resins, resins obtainable by the condensation of aldehydic or ketonic substances with aromatic amino or arylsulphonamide or N-amino substituted arylsulphonamide compounds, resins obtainable by the condensation of urea or thiourea with aldehydes or aldehydes and phenols, lactic acid resins, sulphurized phenol resins, resins obtainable by the polymerization of aldehydes, or of vinyl compounds and the resins obtainable by the condensation of phthalic anhydride or other dibasic acid anhydride or acid with polyhydric alcohols such for example as glycerol. Any other desired ingredients such as dyes or pigments or fire retardants such as the tribomacetanilides may also be added. The compositions are adapted for the production of flexible materials or for coating flexible materials such as coating wires, coating or impregnating fabrics which are required to remain flexible, for example the sheaths of Bowden cables and other flexible tubular structures, for artificial leather and for waterproofing fabrics. In examples the following compositions are specified: (1) cellulose acetate, dibutyl tartrate, triphenyl phosphate, acetone and methyl acetone; (2) cellulose acetate, dibutyl tartrate, tricresyl phosphate, acetone, alcohol and benzene; (3) cellulose acetate, monomethylxylenesulphonamide, diphenylolpropane, acetone, methyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone and diacetone alcohol; (4) cellulose propionate, amyl tartrate and acetone; (5) cellulose acetate, synthetic resin such as diphenylolpropane-formaldehyde resin, tricresyl phosphate, ethylene dichloride, alcohol and acetone; (6) cellulose acetate, synthetic resin as in example (5), dibutyl tartrate, tricresyl phosphate, acetone, dioxane, methyl ether of ethylene glycol and ethyl lactate.
