Abstract
340,451. Electrolytic furnaces. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE, Basle, Switzerland. March 13, 1930, No. 8161. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1929. [Class 39 (iii).] In apparatus for obtaining light metals by the electrolysis of fused haloid salts the metal is collected by means of a narrow but relatively long metal body 4 having suitably insulated walls and provided with or forming an elongated channel 6 in conducting connection with a cathode 5 immersed deeply in the electrolyte and extending below and parallel to the channel in the longitudinal direction. The body 4 and cathode 5 may be formed in one piece or may be separate, the current being led direct to the cathode. The cathode may consist of several plates arranged side by side and may be corrugated, incised or perforated. The channel 6 is inclined towards a discharge tube. The walls of the body 4 are insulated by plates 9, 10 of asbestos cement fitted with a cooling coil. The plates are pressed into position by longitudinal strips 12 and transverse strips 13. Diaphragms as described in Specification 18300/10, [Class 39 (iii), Heating by electricity], may be employed.
