Abstract
539,424. Electrolytically pickling stainless steel strip. DEHN, F. B. (Sharon Steel Corporation). March 5, 1940, No. 4120. [Class 41] Stainless steel strip 12, is electrolytically pickled by passage through an electrolyte, e.g. 2 to 20 per cent. nitric acid and/or sulphuric acid, or caustic soda in proximity to electrodes P, M supplied as from a direct current generator so that some of the current flows from the electrode P, through electrolyte, through the strip 12 and again through the electrolyte to the other electrode M. The strip 12 may be adjustably tensioned to sag to half the depth of the electrolyte so that the upper and lower surfaces receive similar treatment. The electrodes may be of stainless steel arranged vertically and the anode may be in sections to facilitate replacement. In modifications the strip may be traversed on each side of a pair of electrodes ; or between two or more electrodes ; a separate generator may be used with each pair of multiple electrodes. Plating may also be effected, e.g. copper plating of stainless steel, using copper anodes and a solution of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid.
