Abstract
265,170. Aluminium-Industrie-Akt.- Ges. Jan. 27, 1926, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Electrolytic furnaces. - Impure aluminium is refined by electrolysis with a fused electrolyte under such conditions that both the anode and the cathode are in the solid state. The refining may be carried out in a series of cells through which the electrolyte circulates by gravity either by pipes connecting the bottom of one cell to the top of the next or by means of overhanging spouts. The cells may be of insulating or conducting material; in the latter case an insulating joint is inserted in the pipe. The electrodes are of sheet form. The cathodes are of aluminium or other metal. Successive cells may be connected in series or in parallel. Successive electrodes of each cells may also be connected in series or in parallel. The oells may be heated by an auxiliary alternating current. The electrolyte may be caused to travel in a zig-zag path through the cells by baffles or by a staggered arrangement of the electrodes. The cathodes may be removed and melted down when sufficiently built up or the deposit may be mechanically stripped therefrom.
