Abstract
337,415. Holz. A., and Berdell, T. van D. July 30, 1929. Manures.-A mixed fertilizer free of chlorides is prepared by treating potassium chloride with sulphuric acid to produce potassium bisulphate and hydrogen chloride gas, expelling all the gas, preferably by maintaining the mixture at a temperature well below 200 C., and subjecting the bisulphate to the action of ammonia to convert the bisulphate into potassium and ammonium sulphates. The expelled hydrogen chloride is passed into an aqueous suspension of rock phosphate to form calcium chloride and free phosphoric acid, any insoluble solids are removed and sufficient calcium hydroxide added to precipitate. dicalcium phosphate. The dicalcium phosphate is separated and dried, preferably at not much above 100 C., and mixed with the potassium and ammonium sulphates in any desired proportions. An excess of sulphuric acid may be used to treat the potassium chloride so that the proportions of potassium and ammonium sulphates, formed on the subsequent treatment with ammonia, may be varied. The heat generated during the reaction between the potassium bisulphate and the ammonia, preferably gaseous, is sufficient to remove any water in the reaction mixture. Specification 300,402, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], is referred to.
