Abstract

336,800. Groves, W. W., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 18, 1929. Dihydroxyanilides of naphthalene dicarboxylic acids-capable of being coupled with a diazo compound-are made by condensing a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, other than a peri or an ortho acid, in the presence of phosphorus trichloride (or by using a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid chloride directly) with a hydroxyarylamine which has a free o or p position relative, to the hydroxy group. Compounds from the following materials are specified :- naphthalene - 1 : 5 - dicarboxylic acid and 3-aminophenol, 4-aminophenol, 1- methyl - 2 - amino-4-hydroxyhenzene, 1-methyl-2- amino-5-hydroxybenzene; naphthalene-1 : 4-dicarboxylic acid and 3-aminophenol; naphthalene-1: 4-dicarboxylic acid chloride or naphthalene-1 : 5- dicarboxylic acid chloride and 1-amino-5-naphthol or 1-amino-7-naphthol. Naphthalene-2 : 6-dicarboxylic acid and naphthalene-2 : 7-dicarboxylic acid are also mentioned as starting materials. The alkali salts of the products are soluble in water and have an affinity for vegetable fibres. Naphtalene-1-4- and 1-5-dicarboxylic acid chlorides are made by treating the corresponding acids with phosphorus pentachloride.
