Abstract
336,491. Hunt, C. G. Dec. 5, 1929. Magnetic instruments. - An electromagnetic unit for loud-speakers, gramophone pick-ups, &c. comprises a reed so disposed in an angular gap between a pair of pole pieces that its longitudinal axis normally lies along a line bisecting the angle of the gap, the reed being secured at one end which projects through the narrower gap opening and having a free vibratory end projecting through the wider opening. The loud-speaker unit shown comprises a horseshoe magnet 1 carrying inclined pole pieces 2 surrounded by coils 3. If desired, aligned poles with angularly cut ends may be employed and the opposing inclined pole faces may be stepped. A reed 8 disposed between the pole pieces has one end secured by a slot and screw 9 to a pillar 7 carried by a base 5 whilst the free end of the reed is connected to a cone 11 by a rod 10. Rubber &c. buffers 11<a> are provided as shown to prevent the reed from touching the pole pieces. The outer ends of the pole pieces may be provided with slots 12 so that the pole pieces can be moved towards or away from the reed and at the same time be capable of angular movement. The length of the reed between the pillar 7 and the pole pieces can also be made adjustable by forming a slot 13 in the inner end of the reed, and, if desired, the whole of the pillar 7 may be made movable by providing a slot 14 in the base 5.
