Compensating for wear.-In brakes of the internal expanding shoe type operated by a rotary cam one or both of the abutments h against which the cam f operates is adjustable from the exterior of the brake drum, the abutment having a hollow stem j slidable in a boss i formed on the brake shoe g. The stem i is internally threaded and engages a screw a fixed to a wormwheel m engaged by a worm c provided with a screwdriver slot or other means for adjustment. The worm extends to the exterior of the drum d or alternatively a hole may be provided in the wall or cover of the drum to permit the introduction of a screwdriver or box-spanner. A pin k co-operates with a slot in the stem j to prevent it turning. Hooks w screwed into the bosses i carry a pull-off spring x. A hinged cover may close the hole through which the adjusting tool is inserted. A spring detent may be provided to prevent involuntary movement of the worm c caused by vibration. Instead of a worm a rack- and-pinion or a wedge may be used for adjusting the abutment.
