Abstract

459,394. Vehicle couplings. SLEEMAN, W. H., Cartref, Mill Street, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Oct. 17, 1936, No. 28667. [Class 103 (v)] In a tractor-trailer or like vehicle coupling of the kind in which a ball-headed pin 1 is engaged with a socket comprising fixed and movable 2, 3 respectively, the movable part 3 is slidable within a housing 7 and is actuated to open or close the coupling by means of a pivoted lever 12, which is held in the closed position by means of a catch or fastening 14, 17 capable of adjustment so as to compensate for wear and eliminate rattle in the ball-andsocket joint. As shown the operative end of the lever 12 is formed with cam surfaces which are adapted respectively to engage the face 10 of a slot in the sliding member 3 and a cross-pin 23 therein so as to move the member 3 in either direction. The handle of the lever is formed with an elongated slot 18 engageable by a pin 17. Fig. 3, which is carried by a knob 19, and is released by pulling ' i the knob outwardly from the body 14 of the catch against the action of a spring 22. A screwed stern 15 is formed integrally with the body 14 for adjusting the final closing position of the member 3. The fixed part 2 of the socket may have a stem 5 designed for screw engagement with the housing 7.
