Abstract

602,486. Road-vehicle couplings. STRINGER, H. July 30, 1945, No. 19436. [Class 103 (v)] A road-vehicle coupling comprises a socket member 1 secured to the towing vehicle and formed with a vertical bore 3 in which a cylindrical block 5 is slidable and rotatable. The front end of a connecting rod 7, 13 is pivoted to the block by a pin 8, and the rear end of the rod is secured to a piston 15 movable in a cylinder 11 secured to the trailer, the movement of the piston in either direction being controlled by fluid pressure or spring means. The socket member is formed with vertical and lateral openings 6 and 10 to allow movement of the block and connecting rod, and with a hinged lid 4 retained by a spring clip 4a to prevent disengagement of the block. The height of the block is less than the depth of the bore so that sliding movement is permitted to 'compensate for differences in'level between the towing vehicle and trailer. A pair of couplings may be arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown). The cylinders 11 may be positioned below the floor of the trailer. Specification 602,487 is referred to.
