Abstract

334,732. Henschel & Sohn Akt.-Ges. Nov. 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Power-generating systems.-In a locomotive the steam is expanded in the main engine as usual to a pressure above atmospheric pressure and is then expanded in one or more exhaust turbines to atmospheric pressure after which it is condensed, the auxiliary machines necessary for the condensing system being driven by the exhaust turbine. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the boiler steam passes from a superheater B to the main engine D and the exhaust steam passes through a pipe E to an auxiliary engine F, the exhaust steam from which passes at atmospheric pressure to a tank H of the condenser system. Fans L, driven by the engine F, draw air through condensing tubes K in communication with the tank H. Feed water is drawn from the tank by a pump M and forced into the boiler either directly or through a heater Y which is heated by the exhaust from a turbine V driving a blower U. The turbine V may be driven by exhaust steam or may, as shown, take steam direct from the superheater and exhaust it at a pressure of from 3 to 5 atmospheres into the heater Y and finally through a pipe Z into the condenser. In a modification for a locomotive using pulverized fuel the auxiliary engine F also drives a blower for the furnace and a fuel conveyer.
