Abstract

333,621. Pugh, J. V., Hack, G. L., Anstey, F., and Budge-Whitworth, Ltd. May 17, 1929. Valve gear.-In engines having divergent overhead valves, a pair of valves in one plane are actuated by the outer arms of a pair of rockers, the inner arms of which engage one another. Fig. 1 shows a pair of inlet valves b, b<3> actuated by rockers c, c<3> which engage each other at e<4>, e', one of the rockers being actuated by a further rocker f and a tappet rod. A pair of exhaust valves b<1>, b<2> are similarly actuated by rockers c<1>, c<2>, f<1> and a second tappet rod. A tilting distance-piece or a ball may be arranged between the rockers f, c<3> and f<1>, c<2>. The rockers may be mounted on ball or roller bearings, or upon a rocking support such as that described in Specification 232,333. Fig. 6 shows a rocker h having a rolling surface h<7> bearing against a stop h<5>, which is carried by a member h<3> held in a sleeve h<2>. In a modification, the two pairs of valves are actuated by two cams on an overhead crossshaft geared to a vertical shaft, each cam actuating a pair of rockers. The profiles of the cams are inclined to their axes so as to give line contact with the rockers. Fig. 10 shows another form, in which each pair of rockers is carried between plates o mounted on the pivots of the rockers n<2>, n<3> and connected at their other ends by adjustable screws q<2> to the cylinder head. Similar mechanism could be used for operating three inlet and three exhaust valves; or in a cylinder with three valves, one could be actuated by a single rocker and the other two by a pair of rockers. Regulating. -The rocker fulcrum h<5>, Fig. 6, is carried by a member h<3> adjustable in the sleeve h<2> by means of a screw plug h<8>. In a modification, the adjustment is effected by a nut engaging the sleeve externally and arranged below the lever so as to engage trunnions carried by the member h<3>. In the form of mounting shown in Fig. 10, the plates o supporting the rockers are adjusted by the screw connections q<2> at one end.
