Air, removing; buckets; single - acting b u c k e t pumps; measuring devices; pipes; priming. - In a measuring pump for petrol &c. of the kind in which the discharge stroke of the piston in the measuring chamber simultaneously draws in a new charge behind the piston, an air pump 15, 16 is operated by the piston 7 to prime the suction pipe 1 and remove air from the chamber 2, the volume of petrol or petrol and air drawn by the two pumps being in excess of the volume delivered. The measuring chamber 3 may form with the suction pipe 1 or the delivery pipe 4 a U- chamber in which the petrol is retained by gravity while the pump is not working. The petrol passes through a non- return valve 14 in the pipe 1 and enters a chamber 3. During the upstroke of the piston 7, the petrol in the chamber 3 passes through the valves 8, 12 in the piston, and during the downstroke these valves close and the liquid is delivered through a chamber 6 and pipe 4 to the discharge pipe 20. The valve 8 is carried by the piston rod 9 and forms a loose connection between the piston and rod. A connection between the top of the delivery pipe 4 and the suction pipe 1 is controlled by a float valve 21 to prevent syphoning.
