Generating by indirect contact of hot waste gases.-A water heater or boiler comprises the combination within a single outer shell of a pair of combustion chambers 2 and 3 provided with water tubes, the chamber 2 being adapted for direct firing, for instance by an oil burner 5, and chamber 3 being heated by exhaust gases. The gases enter chamber 3 through inlet 9, passing down over the thimble water tubes and then escaping to the atmosphere through an outlet 8. The gases from the oil burner 5 rise up flue 6 and descend past the thimbles and escape through an outlet 7: A damper may connect outlet 7 to inlet 9 or to the atmosphere, and in the latter case a draught-inducer may be provided.
