Mixing solids with fluids in flow.-In apparatus for mixing powdered fuel with air applicable also to finely powdered material in general, the air or other gas passes through a Venturi tube i provided with an opening d through which a rotary wire brush c or like member having flexible arms forces the finely divided fuel or other material in the form of a spray into the Venturi tube. As shown, an obstruction h causes the wires or flexible arms to spring forward after being first held up. A door e which carries the projection h is adjusted by a worm gear to vary the width of the aperture. The area of the Venturi tube i may be regulated by forming one wall in two parts l, l' which overlap and are hinged to the casing at their outer ends, a screw operated member m moving them in and out. The speed of rotation of the brush depends on its diameter. Deflector plates may be provided in the inlet b to the cylinder.
