Abstract
328,487. Allen, R. June 5, 1929. Exhaust silencers.-The silencer consists of a hollow wireur strip-wound body of polygonal cross-section and of prismatic or pyramidal form. An adaptor 1, Fig. 1, for attaching to the exhaust pipe has a diametral web 2 carrying a bolt 3 which is formed integrally 'with radial webs 4 of which eight are shown. The webs at one end engage slots 5 in the adaptor, and at the other end form an abutment for a collar 6 secured bv a nut 7. The outer edges of the webs are serrated by recesses 8 adapted to receive turns of a wire 9 which is wound over the webs and has one end secured by a screw 10 and the other end by the collar 6. The gases issue radially through the spaces between the coils either direct into the atmosphere, or into a casing 11 with an outlet 12. The casing is secured to the adaptor 1 by a split-ring 13 and clamp 14, 15. In a modification, Fig. 5, the webs 4 are formed separately from the bolt and are supported thereon by flanges 19, such flanges alternating with recesses 20 in adjacent webs. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the webs are slid into grooves such as 26, Fig. 9, formed longitudinally of the bolt 3, the turns of wire are spaced by separate serrated'strips, the bolt 3 is secured to the adaptor by a cross-pin, and the outer casing is provided at its discharge end with a cowl adapted, due to the motion of the silencer, to collect air which is directed obliquely over the outlet to exert an aspirating action upon the exhaust. The webs, instead of being plane, may be corrugated and apertured. Alternative methods of winding the wire are showr. in Fig. 9, in which the webs have shallow recesses 31 which may be filled with (1) three turns 9<a>, (2) one turn of a solid metal strip 9<b>, or (3) one turn of a channelled strip 9<c>.
