Abstract

275,437. Blanchard, J. Sept. 20, 1926. Exhaust silencers.-A silencer for internalcombustion engines comprises a number of flaring partition members 3, Fig. 10, of different external diameters and lengths, between which the gases pass to or from a central space 5. As shown, the forward ends 7 of the members are of gradually decreasing size to provide a tapering central space 5, which communicates with the exhaust pipe 1. The members 3 are held in place between outer and inner cones 2, 6 by radial bars or wires. To the rear of the members 2, 3, 6 is an expansion chamber 8 connected to an outlet pipe 12 by a conical chamber 9 fitted with a conical baffle 10. The forward ends of the members 3 may be slightly bent in the direction of the axis, and the members may be dished or waved as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and connected to each other by bolts 26 or they may be replaced by a continuous conoidal spiral. In a modification, Fig. 11, the chamber 8 is fitted with cones 16, 17, which are connected at their apices by a short tube 18 and fitted with nested conical members 3, the central cone 6 of the forward set being provided with a conical spreader 14. The conical member 13 leading to the outlet pipe 12 is fitted with a similar set of nested cones 3 and conical spreader 14. In another form, the expansion chamber 8 is replaced by a conical chamber leading to the smaller end of a second set of nested cones such as 3, followed by a second conical chamber leading to the outlet pipe.
