Agitating materials and liquids together.-In washing pulp for use as a filtering medium, the pulp is introduced into a cylindrical vessel a and the washing water and pulp are drawn downwards together by an air or steam injector h into a pipe f which returns them to the vessel past a deflector g adapted to impart to them a swirling motion about the longitudinal axis of the vessel. Water enters the vessel continuously by a pipe k and escapes at the top through a screen b which may be provided with a water spray to avoid clogging.
