Abstract

A clear homogeneous silica hydrosol is produced by mixing a solution of an alkali metal silicate with an inorganic acid which comprises introducing into a mixing zone a stream of alkali metal silicate solution at a pressure and direction sufficient to create a whirling mass thereof, passing the whirling solution downwardly through a confined area in said zone to a mixing chamber having a restricted discharge port and introducing a finely divided stream of mineral acid into said chamber in a hollow conical pattern in contact with the whirling silicate solution said acid stream having an apparent pressure of at least 125 psia, thereby creating extreme turbulence within the mixing and resulting in an apparent pressure of at least 250 psia and collecting the resulting silica hydrosol. The sol contains 10-20% by weight of silica and the acid is introduced in amount slightly in excess of that necessary to neutralise silicate. The hydrosol can be discharged from the mixing zone under the surface of a bath of previously formed hydrosol. Specification 627,500 is referred to and the process may be used using the mixing nozzle described and claimed in Specification 844,950.
