Abstract

322,995. Ferranti, S. Z. de, and Ferranti, Ltd. June 15, 1928. Suspensions.- Magnetic suspensions, particularly for the rotors of electricity meters, wherein a partial balance of the force due to gravity is obtained, comprise arrangements for eliminating all side thrust and magnetic drag, the rotors being also provided with upper and lower mechanical bearings. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, magnets 4, 6 are connected by non-magnetic pillars 5 and co-operate with mild steel cup members 2, 3 secured to the rotor spindle. The cups 2, 3 may be integral with a common boss. A cup-shaped permanent magnet of cobalt steel with concentric unlike poles can be employed. or two U-shaped magnets with like poles adjacent can be located loosely around the rotor spindle for co-operation with the members 2, 3. The crowns of the co-operating magnetic parts can be castellated to stop creeping of the moving system. Specifications 19479/97 and 3507/98, [both in Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], are referred to.
