Grates; boilers, ar. rangement of. - A grate, particularly for domestic ranges, and suitable for burning coke, comprises a bottom a which can be raised and lowered together with a rear grid l behind which is an air space at the rear of the ash chamber. In the construction shown, the grate a is pivoted at the front to the vertical end members of the grate front, and can be used in either a rearwardly-inclined or an approximately horizontal position, it being retained in the latter position by lugs d which engage stops e. The rear grid l is removably carried, preferably in an inclined position, on forwardlyextending side members of a plate i which lines the rear face of the ash-pit, and is provided with lugs k engaging holes in a flange j of the same plate. The inner faces of the vertical bars of the front grid p are grooved to form channels r up which air may pass to the fire. The flue t beneath the boiler slopes towards the fire to prevent lodgment of ashes in it.
