318,327. Elling, H. June 20, 1928. Apparatus for making filaments.- Artificial fibres, threads ribbons or the like made of cellulose are treated with liquids for washing or for other purposes. such as desulphurizing, bleaching, wetting, acidifying, oiling, or dyeing, by forcing or sucking the liquids through the material wound on a reel made of a rigid non-perforated porous material or on a reel consisting of a hollow perforated cylinder provided with a non- perforated porous coating, in a direction outwardly from the interior of the reel. Suitable materials for such coatings are, for example, blotting paper, textile fabrics, asbestos, glassfrits, or zeolite. The perforated cylinder must be inert to the liquid used for the treatment, for instance, when the material is being treated with alkali or alkali sulphide, iron, ceramic material, an artificial resin such as a phenol-formaldehyde resin or hardened rubber mav be used or when acids or chlorine are used for the treatment, pure aluminium, an artificial resin, such as a phenolformaldehyde resin, hardened rubber, or ceramic materials may be used. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder 1 has perforations 2 and a coating 3 of non-perforated porous material on which the spun goods 4 are wound. The reel may be perforated over its entire, surface and the perforations may be of different sizes. The porous coating may cover the outer face of the reel partly or completely but in the former case should cover that part of the reel on which the material is to be wound. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the reel consists of a rigid non-perforated porous material 5, the interior face of which may, if desired, be provided with a glazing 6 from the ends to the line f. The liquids used in the treatments pass through the material outwardly from the interior. The liquid treatments are performed in a very short time without any loss of the liquids.
