Carbonizing apparatus.-Coal is carbonized by being piled on a hearth 4 and ignited by wood which is placed in the centre of the charge and adjacent to a chimney 8, the whole being covered with asbestos sheeting up to about two thirds of its height. When combustion is started further asbestos sheeting with holes 19 for admission of air is placed at the top and combustion then takes place downwardly, the distillates passing through openings 5 into chambers 2. These chambers are water cooled, the condensates forming therein flowing out through a channel 12 and outlet 13, while the fixed gases pass through openings 11 to the outlet 9 leading to a purifying apparatus. A pump 14 circulates water through the water jacket and a cooling device 16.
